The Plymouth Selfie Wall project was specifically designed to empower local Plymouth women of any age, skill or background with a passion for art in a public forum for our city to view.

March launched the competition with a clear purpose “to empower local female artists and to put Plymouth on the map for its creativity”.

Since the project’s commencement, it has seen a return of around 250 women’s submissions, a fourfold of what we had expected to gain over the month course of the competition. Winners were decided by a panel of judges at The Box Plymouth looking at all pieces entered. The main judging criteria was to measure if the design would do the following:

- appeal to tourists
- encourage people to take a photo in front of the design
- increase footfall to the selfie wall location from local residents

The project was funded by the High Street Heritage Action Zone Project in an endeavour to unlock the potential of high streets like Plymouth where winning designs will be exhibited onto local walls for the world to enjoy.

Congratulations to the Plymouth Selfie Wall Design winners! The 5 winners consist of local Plymouth women from graphic design, professional artists and first time artists!

“I wanted to think of something that would unite those who are born in Plymouth and those laying roots down here, together I like the pride that 'made in Plymouth' brings, and can see it reaching creative types as well as entrepreneurial types that want to celebrate their successes, but also what the city has given them.”

“It would be amazing to have some of my art replicated on a larger scale in my hometown and have people taking selfies with it!”

“Creativity is born in Plymouth and often leaves in search of 'greener pastures' when in fact they don't know it's astroturf and they should have stayed here! A staple of the Janner language and a well-loved, multi-purpose phrase,”

Confirmed Wall Locations

“I have found that commissions for public art in Plymouth are limited and regularly taken by other male artists who often aren't from the area, so this is a great opportunity.”
Mrs Mural's Seagull Design

“Affirmations are powerful statements that inspire, motivate and encourage us to be the best versions of ourselves. After the grey darkness painted by the pandemic over the past 2 years I wanted to bring sunshine to the streets and remind residents and visitors of how AWESOME they are. I encourage everyone to stand in the spot and soak up the statements that surround them!”

The Ocean category had the most entries, and they were all incredible!

We have partnered with the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park on this category and selcted 3 winners.

We are awaiting confirmation for the locations for these walls, which will be in Firestone Bay, The Hoe, Mountbatten.

The Ocean (artists interpretation)
When you stand on the Hoe on a summers evening, what do you see? Have you sat in the National Marine Aquarium and just watched? Are you a wild swimmer? Are you scared of the vastness of the ocean? The unknown? Do you know what lies on the bottom of the ocean floor right here on the Breakwater?
